WCG 2005 Grand Finals

For the uninitiated, WCG - World Cyber Games. You can read about the history and stuff of WCG, here.

For this year’s final, it’s going to be held at Suntec, Singapore from Nov 16-20. This is where the world top cyber athletes compete for fame and if not, fortune.

My first glimpse or should I say introduction of WCG is at the Malaysia Finals held a few years back. I’m not sure which year it was but it was held at Sunway Pyramid. I was a spectator back then and not that many people participate. May be the promotion is not that aggressive and the WCG thingy in Malaysia is still in it’s infancy stage at that time. Maybe online gaming hasn’t take-off in the gaming community. Lots of ‘may be’s.

One thing that I remember well on that day is that I received a Windows XP cap for playing HALO. The rest is sort of a blur.

Microsoft, Malaysia (I think) has setup a booth there and you can try your hands at HALO. I did. They gave me the cap. Some of you might think, ‘Aper lah mamat nie, dapat cap pun nak excited’ but I don’t know, may be it’s the sentimental value of the cap or being at the WCG Malaysia final itself gets me pumped.

Guess what I did this year? I participate in the WCG - KL Preliminaries. It was held from 26-27 August and the National Final on the 28 August at MVEC – Mid Valley Exhibition Centre. You might think ‘Dah tua-tua nak main game lagi?’ Well I’m 33 years young ** cough **. Some people like cars, motorbikes, racing, etc. My cup of tea is computer games, amongst other things.

Anyways, lost in the first round of Warcraft III – TFT. Why? Not enough online practice. Playing against a computer opponent is wayyyy different than playing against another person. And I did not bring a headphone. **Most of the noobies also didn’t** Yup, I’m a noob.

Sound, able to hear what is happening in your game is important in any games, unless if you’re playing Solitaire, mine sweeper etc. (Some might disagree)

The things I learn at the National Finals.

1. Bring a headphone

2. Practice

3. Practice

4. Practice

5. And more practice

6. Be patience, you might need to wait a looooooonnnngggggggg time before your game. If your that good, you can come back later…. Or if you’re really good, you can come back the next day…. And if you’re really really good, you might just be in the Malaysian Finals.

If God willing, I’ll be back (Say it as Arnold in Terminator).

That is why I have bought an original copy of Wacraft III – ROC & TFT. Get connected (I’m on streamyx now). Play… play… play.

To date, I’ve play 9 games of TFT – online! Won only 3 games.

I SUCK.
